Itching and pain in the rectum are two common symptoms of
hemorrhoids, as is bleeding during or after a bowel movement. Pain is
more common in the case of external hemorrhoids. This condition involves
the formation of a painful lump of inflamed, blood-filled tissue at or
near the rectal opening. This lump is known as a thrombosed or clotted
hemorrhoid. This type of hemorrhoid commonly results in straining to
pass stools and bleeding during or after a bowel movement.
Internal hemorrhoids are another common problem. They may also be
accompanied by bleeding, and large internal hemorrhoids often result in
an itching sensation due to the mucus they secrete. If they bulge into
the large intestine, they can also cause a sensation of fullness or the
urge to have a bowel movement. The larger the hemorrhoid, the more
uncomfortable it is likely to be.
Internal hemorrhoids cause pain far less frequently than external
ones. But, if a large, internal hemorrhoid protrudes into the anus and
the blood flow is cut off by the anal sphincter muscle, you may
experience severe pain. This is called a strangulated hemorrhoid. If
this happens, don't ignore this important warning sign; it is imperative
that you get medical help. Don't put this off even if your condition
